Hotel Linen Procurement Essential Course - Why "Cotton" Remains the Preferred Choice for Hotel Staff?
Key words: Long-staple cotton, High count and high density, Cost-effectiveness, Durability
In the hotel industry, bedding is commonly referred to as "linens". It is the item that guests come into contact with the most frequently and feels the most directly. According to the latest market research data, 78% of guests will decide whether to stay again based on the comfort of the bedding. Among various materials, pure cotton, due to its natural, breathable, and comfortable characteristics, has always held the dominant position in the hotel procurement market.
Classification of pure cotton materials: from "ordinary" to "luxurious"
For hotel procurement staff, not all pure cotton products are the same. The currently popular pure cotton products on the wholesale market are mainly divided into three categories:
Budget option: 40 regular cotton threads:
For economy-class chain hotels or guesthouses, cost control is the top priority. The common 40-piece pure cotton bedding set available on the market can be priced within an extremely low range with a large order quantity. Although this type of fabric has a slightly rough texture, it is strong and durable, resistant to pilling, easy to clean, and capable of meeting the frequent washing requirements during holidays.
Mid-to-high-end standard: 60 pounds of long-staple cotton:
At present, mid-to-high-end hotels (such as Yado, Quanjian, etc.) are increasingly inclined to use 60-gram or 80-gram long-staple cotton fabrics. The fibers of long-staple cotton (such as Egyptian cotton and Pima cotton) are longer and more resilient than ordinary cotton, which means they can be spun into finer yarns. By using satin fabrics interwoven with 60S40S or 60S60S, the surface presents a luster similar to that of silk, while still retaining the moisture-absorbing property of cotton.
Luxury Choice: High-Thread Count and High-Density Fabrics:
A genuine five-star hotel usually customizes over 80 or even 100 pieces of pure cotton fabric. This type of fabric is extremely fine and soft, with a gentle touch, but it also has higher requirements for washing and maintenance.
2. Why do hotels prefer "high thread count and high density"?
"High count and high density" is the core indicator for evaluating the quality of pure cotton fabrics. The so-called "count" (S) refers to the thickness of the yarn. The higher the count, the thinner the yarn and the softer and smoother the fabric. For instance, cotton satin fabrics with a count of 300TC or above are popular choices for high-end hotels.
The advantages of this type of fabric are:
Extremely strong durability: The high-quality long-staple cotton fibers have good resilience. Compared to ordinary fabrics, the number of washes can be increased by more than 50%, effectively resisting the fiber breakage caused by frequent industrial washing in hotels.
Outstanding color fastness: High-end hotels require linen to be as white and fresh as new or to have bright colors. The pure cotton fabric using reactive dyeing technology has a color fastness of up to grade 4 or above. Even after 100 industrial washes, it still won't fade or turn gray.
3. Procurement Suggestions and Cost Balance
Although long-staple cotton has excellent texture, its price is relatively higher. For hotels that aim to enhance their reputation during peak seasons such as May Day and National Day, a "gradient allocation" strategy can be adopted: ordinary standard rooms can use 60-thread-count pure cotton, while suites or executive floors can be equipped with 80-thread-count or even 100-thread-count long-staple cotton bedding, which can not only control the overall budget but also create a "sleeping highlight".
