The oldest known reference to tablecloth dates back to around 100 AD, when it was mentioned by the ancient Latin Spanish poet Marshall.

White or predominantly white tablecloths were once the standard covering for dining tables in many European cultures. In the late Middle Ages, laying the table with good white linen or cotton was an important part of the preparation of a feast in wealthy households. Over time, the custom of placing cutlery on cloth became common among most social classes except the poorest. As eating habits changed in the 20th century, there was a wider range of table setting styles. Some formal dinners still use white tablecloths, usually brocade woven, but other colors and patterns are common.
