The selection of materials and quality standards for hotel bedding - from yarn count to fabric manufacturing decisions for procurement

For hotel buyers, bedding is far more than just "bed linens". It is a crucial piece of core hardware that directly affects guests' sleep experience, determines the positive reviews on OTA platforms, and reflects the brand positioning of the hotel. A set of high-quality bedding not only needs to meet the durability requirements under frequent washing, but also needs to match the hotel's grade in terms of touch, breathability, and appearance. This article will provide a set of quantifiable selection standards for buyers from four dimensions: material selection, yarn count, weaving process, and quality inspection.

1. Material selection: Cotton is the foundation, and long-staple cotton marks the boundary.

At present, the mainstream fabric for hotel bedding is still mainly made of pure cotton. However, even "pure cotton", the quality can vary greatly. The length of the fine cotton fibers in ordinary cotton is usually between 25-31mm, while high-quality long-staple cotton (such as Egyptian long-staple cotton, American PIMA cotton, and Xinjiang long-staple cotton in China) has a fiber length of over 35mm, which is longer and more uniform. The advantages of long-staple cotton lie in: the surface fuzz of the spun yarn is less, the yarn strength is higher, the fabric woven from it is smoother and more durable, and it still retains its softness after multiple washes.

When purchasing managers inspect suppliers, they should not merely rely on terms like "Egyptian cotton", but should request original origin certificates and reports on the length of cotton fibers. For mid-to-high-end hotels, it is recommended to set "100% long-staple cotton" as the basic threshold; for economy or limited-service hotels, a solution of high-quality fine-staple cotton blended with long-staple cotton can be adopted to strike a balance between cost and quality.

2. Yarn count: It's not the higher the better. The key lies in the proper matching.

The term "s" refers to the unit used to measure the thickness of yarn. The higher the number of "s" units, the thinner the yarn and the softer and smoother the fabric. Common hotel bedding yarn counts are usually concentrated at 60S, 80S, 100S, and 120S. Density (TC) refers to the total number of warp and weft yarns per square inch. Generally, a density of 300TC or above is considered a high-density fabric.

One of the common mistakes in procurement is the blind pursuit of high yarn count and high density. In fact, the yarn count and density need to be matched. For example, a 60S fabric paired with 300-400TC is a golden combination, which can ensure a smooth touch and also has good wear resistance; while if the density of 100S or higher super fine yarn is too high (such as above 800TC), it will instead make the fabric too tight, reduce breathability, and be prone to cracking after washing. For regular operating hotels, 60S/300TC-400TC satin fabric is the most cost-effective choice; for luxury hotels, 80S-100S/500TC-600TC can be selected, but the washing and maintenance plan must also be upgraded simultaneously.

3. Weaving process: Satin weave is the mainstream, while jacquard and embroidery enhance the quality.

The common fabric structures used in hotel bedding include plain weave, twill weave, and satin weave. Plain weave is durable but has a relatively hard feel and is often used for the inner lining of pillowcases or in budget hotels; twill weave has a moderate softness; satin weave (gown weave) is preferred by high-end hotels as it has longer warp threads, a smooth surface, and strong luster.

In addition, jacquard and embroidery are important methods for enhancing the visual quality of bedding. The jacquard technique directly incorporates patterns into the fabric using a loom, resulting in a three-dimensional design that is not prone to wear and tear, making it suitable for decorating areas on bed covers and sheets. Embroidery, on the other hand, is more flexible and can incorporate hotel logos or custom patterns. However, it is important to note that overly dense embroidery may affect the fabric's flatness, and additional protection is required during washing.

4. Quality Inspection and Supplier Evaluation: Ensuring the Final Quality Control

Before signing the contract, the purchaser should require the supplier to provide a third-party test report, with a particular focus on the following indicators:

Breaking strength: The breaking strength in both the warp and weft directions must comply with national standards (such as GB/T 22844-2009) to ensure the service life under high-frequency washing conditions.

Washing shrinkage rate: For qualified products, the shrinkage rate after 5 washes should be within ±3%, to prevent bed sheets from "shrinking" and becoming unusable.

Fastness: The fastness to dry rubbing, wet rubbing and soaping must all reach level 4 or above to prevent color bleeding and fading.

Formaldehyde content and pH value: Must comply with the requirements of Class A or Class B of the "National Technical Specifications for Basic Safety of Textile Products" (GB 18401) to ensure safety for human use.

In addition, it is recommended that purchasers conduct on-site inspections of the suppliers' factories, with a particular focus on the dyeing and finishing processes. Excellent suppliers will employ reactive dyes and biological enzyme finishing techniques, which are not only environmentally friendly but also enable the fabric to achieve a more durable soft feel and brighter colors.

Summary: The material and quality standards of hotel bedding are the cornerstone of the purchasing decision. Purchasers should control the material source, scientifically select the combination of yarn counts, pay attention to the experience differences brought by weaving techniques, and use strict quality inspections as the basis for acceptance. Only by establishing clear selection standards can we create a bedding system for hotels that is both elegant and durable while keeping the cost under control.
