Switch to eco-friendly consumables. How much money can your hotel save in a year?
Will the purchase cost necessarily increase if we switch to eco-friendly toothbrushes, slippers and combs? Many purchasing managers' first reaction is "definitely more expensive". But the truly smart ones calculate the overall cost - the purchase price is just the tip of the iceberg. Hidden costs, customer complaint losses, brand discounts, policy risks... these unseen expenses often exceed the purchase price by several times.
Hanbi conducted a 12-month practical tracking study with several hotels. The data shows that after switching to eco-friendly materials, the overall cost not only did not increase, but actually decreased by 8% to 15%. This article will thoroughly calculate this "green account" from four dimensions: explicit costs, hidden costs, full life cycle value and green premium.
1. Explicit cost: The unit price has increased, but the total quantity has decreased.
On the surface, switching to environmentally friendly products does lead to a short-term increase in unit prices. Take a hotel with 300 rooms and an average annual occupancy rate of 75% as an example: an ordinary plastic toothbrush costs about 0.6 yuan per piece, while Hanbi's eco-friendly toothbrush costs about 1.0 yuan per piece, with a price difference of about 0.4 yuan; an ordinary plastic comb costs about 0.3 yuan per set, while Hanbi's PLA comb costs about 0.6 yuan, with a price difference of about 0.3 yuan; an ordinary
disposable slippers cost about 4.0 yuan per pair, while Hanbi's corn fiber slippers cost about 5.5 yuan per pair, with a price difference of about 1.5 yuan. In total, each room adds about 2.2 yuan per day, and the annual total increase is about 180,000 yuan.
This may seem like an additional expense. But before making a final judgment, it is not advisable to rush into conclusions without fully accounting for the situation.
Hanbi achieved two significant accomplishments in terms of explicit costs through large-scale design and volume reduction. The first was to lower logistics costs - the design of folding toothbrushes and compressed slippers enabled an additional 40% of products to be packed per cubic meter. Originally, the annual freight was 120,000 yuan, but after switching to Hanbi, it dropped to 85,000 yuan, saving 35,000 yuan. The second was to reduce the loss rate - the ordinary plastic slippers had a damage rate of about 5% during transportation. Hanbi's corn fiber slippers have a more stable structure, with the damage rate reduced to 1.5%. Calculated based on an annual purchase of 80,000 pairs, the loss was reduced by 2,800 pairs, saving 15,000 yuan.
These two optimizations directly offset an increase of approximately 50,000 yuan in explicit costs. The remaining 130,000 yuan represents the space where implicit costs can come into play.
2. Implicit Costs: The Vast Abyss of Negative Reviews, Customer Complaints and Brand Damage
In the field of hotel consumables, there is a "hidden rule": for every 10 cents reduction in the purchase price, the potential customer complaint cost may increase by 10 times. This is no exaggeration. The bristles of ordinary plastic toothbrushes vary in roundness, and many low-priced products fail to meet the 90% standard set by national regulations, resulting in frequent complaints about gum bleeding. The teeth of ordinary plastic combs often have burrs, which can cause minor scalp injuries or even lead to guest claims in severe cases. Poor-quality disposable slippers have problems such as strong odors and poor slip resistance, and "cheap feeling" and "slippery on the sole" have become common complaints.
Hanbi environmental protection materials have achieved a qualitative breakthrough in these aspects. The rate of blunt bristles has stabilized at over 90%, and the complaint rate for gums has decreased from 0.8% to 0.1%. The PLA comb is formed in one piece without burrs, and the complaint rate of scalp scratches is zero. The corn fiber slippers adopt an antibacterial and anti-slip design, and the complaint rate of unpleasant odors has decreased by 90%.
Based on actual data: Under the conventional plastic solution, the annual customer complaint compensation and the potential revenue loss due to negative reviews amount to approximately 150,000 to 200,000 yuan. After switching to Hanbi, this expense drops to 20,000 to 30,000 yuan, resulting in an annual savings of about 120,000 to 170,000 yuan. Just this one aspect alone has completely covered and even exceeded the incremental increase in explicit costs.
3. Life Cycle Cost: The longer you use it, the greater the savings.
If the customer complaint cost represents the end of "bad debts", then the full life cycle cost represents the beginning of "good debts". Environmental protection does not mean one-time consumption - Hanbi has designed solutions for some product categories to extend their lifespan, further reducing long-term costs.
Let's look at the slippers first. Ordinary disposable slippers usually can only be worn for one or two days. They have a thin texture, poor slip resistance and a strong smell. The Hanbi corn fiber slippers adopt a double-layer structure. The outer layer is made of plant fibers which are breathable and do not make the feet feel stuffy. The inner layer is made of cotton fabric which is soft and skin-friendly. They can bear a weight of over 150 kilograms and can be naturally decomposed under specific conditions. The extension of their service life means a reduction in the frequency of purchase and a significant decrease in the cost of single-use and double-use.
Let's look at the linen and toiletries. The solid cleansing products provided by Hanbi, with one 10-gram solid shampoo bar equivalent to 6 to 8 uses, have a 70% reduction in volume and a 25% decrease in logistics costs. After introducing this series to the resort hotels, not only did the logistics costs significantly decrease, but the negative review rate also dropped by 18%, and the Ctrip rating increased by 0.3 points.
4. Comprehensive comparison with ordinary products
From a holistic perspective, the differences between ordinary plastic consumables and Hanbi's environmentally friendly products are comprehensive.
In terms of raw material sources, ordinary products are made from petroleum-based plastics, which are non-renewable and highly dependent on fossil energy; Hanbi, on the other hand, uses renewable plant-based raw materials such as straw, PLA (polylactic acid), and corn fibers, achieving a green substitution from the very beginning.
In terms of degradation performance, ordinary plastics take hundreds of years to decompose and eventually form non-degradable microplastics that pollute soil and water sources; while Hanbi materials degrade at a rate of over 90% within 180 days under industrial composting conditions, returning to CO₂, water and biomass, without any harmful residues.
In terms of safety, common plastic products often contain harmful substances such as bisphenol A, plasticizers, and heavy metals. Long-term exposure to these substances may affect human health. Hanbi products have obtained the OEKO-TEX® certification, ensuring that they do not contain harmful chemical residues such as formaldehyde and heavy metals. Even for infants, they are safe and worry-free to use.
In terms of user experience, common toothbrushes often have problems such as overly blunt bristles, jagged teeth on combs, and unpleasant odors in slippers that can cause slips and falls. However, Hanbi products have significantly improved in aspects like the roundness of bristles, the smoothness of comb teeth, and antibacterial and anti-slip properties of slippers, thereby winning the favor of guests with their attention to detail.
In terms of compliance risks, ordinary plastics are exposed to the risks of fines and bans under the "plastic restriction order"; Hanbi's environmental protection products fully comply with the national policy requirement by the end of 2025 that hotels must not actively provide disposable plastic products, and have completed the compliance planning ahead of schedule.
In terms of brand value, ordinary products cannot offer any environmental protection endorsements and thus struggle to achieve brand premium. However, Hanbi products, with their advantages such as OEKO-TEX® certification, degradation rate reports, and recyclable packaging, help hotels obtain the "low-carbon hotel" label and traffic bias on OTA platforms, and establish a green and responsible brand image in the minds of customers.
5. Annual Comprehensive Benefit Calculation
Take a hotel with 300 rooms and an average annual occupancy rate of 75% as an example. Summarize the revenues of all the above dimensions. The incremental explicit cost is approximately 180,000 yuan. After optimizing logistics and reducing losses, it can be offset by about 50,000 yuan, resulting in a net increment of approximately 130,000 yuan. The implicit cost savings (customer complaint compensation and negative review losses) are approximately 120,000 to 170,000 yuan, which fully covers the net increment and still leaves a surplus. Adding the direct savings from logistics and loss optimization, the reduction in solid cleaning and hygiene logistics costs, the increase in OTA traffic and brand premium, etc., the annual comprehensive net income can reach 6 to 100,000 yuan.
